Back in business after COVID-19

Government departments and businesses sensibly shut down face-to-face training programs during the pandemic.

WriteBusiness focused on writing and editing projects during 2020. I also had the pleasure of working with Allen&Unwin on my new book, With My Little Eye, which was released on February 2 and is available wherever, and in whatever form, you buy your books.

Like the rest of the world, we made the shift to Zoom and Microsoft Teams training and coaching and we will continue to offer remote training as an option.

But I am still a true believer in face-to-face training as the most powerful and beneficial way for people to learn. So I’m delighted to be getting a few calls from organisations hoping to run workshops in their training rooms.

If you’d like to discuss writing or editing training for your organisation, please contact me through this website and I’ll call you to discuss your options.

Director WriteBusiness

Writing badly is easy. Just string together a bunch of buzz words or legal terms. Toss off a patronising reply to a tedious complaint from a customer. Or you could write down all the facts in your notebook, without any analysis or helpful recommendations.

Good writing means you make the effort to understand your reader and carefully craft words to make sense for them. Good writing is a deliberate act of care for the reader. It is harder than bad writing — but why bother to write at all if you don’t communicate with your reader?

Every piece of writing, however routine, should illuminate. Writing takes muddle and confusion and brings clarity and enlightenment.

Not all of us can be great writers but we can all improve — and it can get easier. Italo Calvino wrote ‘I write as well as I can on each occasion.’ This simple and beautiful goal is something we can all aspire to.

WriteBusiness is a small, highly experienced consultancy. We train, coach and mentor people in all kinds of workplaces to write as well as they can.  We keep doing it because we see results. Why not contact us to see how improved writing can improve the reputation of your organisation?

Sandra Hogan’s writing courses get good results with our staff and I recommend them highly. Her solid experience in writing for government ministers means her classes are very practical, as well as being lively and engaging.

Sandra’s short sharp writing courses fitted into our busy office schedule. She helped us adapt technical documents to readers in Council. We learned a lot in a short time.

Over the last 4 years Sandra has facilitated a variety of writing courses for our staff as part of our Annual Development program. Staff who attend her sessions, including me, have found the content and format easy to follow and very engaging. The knowledge she imparts and her skill in teaching how to write is very impressive and this is reflected in the feedback I’ve received from participants. Here is an example:

“It was a joy to receive training from such an articulate individual, clearly passionate about the subject and her profession. The workbook was easy to work through and logical in its construct. It contains useful case studies and some valuable tools, which I know I will refer to in the future. Sandra was deeply engaging and facilitated an almost immediate rapport amongst all participants, such that, I believe, everyone completed the course with some constructive plans to enhance their writing and some new network buddies. Thank you for providing a thoroughly useful, enjoyable opportunity to learn.”

Hi Sandra

I wanted to let you know that I really could relate and enjoyed your session yesterday. I came away with a lot to think about and start using.

It was the best course I have attended. Hoping that everyone takes up doing it (will be spreading the word).

It helped with my briefing note today and I had a real achievement today. My first document that I got clearance on without 1 correction.

Can honestly say

I GOT IT!

Sandra has facilitated workshops to improve capability in writing briefs and ministerials. Throughout the development of the curriculum and instructional design, Sandra demonstrated her professionalism to ensure quality training was delivered within a limited planning timeframe.

Sandra exhibited her collaborative skills throughout the entire process and actively strived to attain the desired learning outcomes. Participants have provided positive evaluations about their learning experiences.

Sandra’s open and engaging style, combined with her extensive knowledge and wonderful recounts of her own experiences, culminated in an interactive workshop about a technical subject. Participants were able to discuss writing challenges in a safe environment which afforded them the opportunity of applying their own work examples.
